Mitra Phukan is a writer, translator, columnist and trained Shastriya Sangeet vocalist. Her eighteen works brought out by major publishers span children’s books, biographies (including one on Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika) and the three novels The Collector’s Wife, A Monsoon of Music and What Will People Say. She has also written a collection of short stories titled A Full Night’s Thievery, and translated major Assamese authors—such as Birendra Kumar Bhattacharjee and Harekrishna Deka—into English. She writes extensively on Indian music as well.
Mitra Phukan’s works have been extensively anthologized and she herself has also been translated into several languages. Her books are taught in colleges and universities across the country.
