Maitrayee Patar, a Tiwa woman from Assam, is a poet, singer, songwriter and academic. A first-generation postgraduate from her village, she holds a PhD in Sociology from Tezpur University and an M.Phil in Women’s Studies from TISS, Mumbai. Her poetry, written in Assamese, English and Tiwa, explores the complexities of her roots while celebrating nature. Her anthologies, Mur Kolmou Dinor Xunali Baat (2015) and Dingit Goja Pani Mongoh (2020), are widely acclaimed.

Maitrayee has performed at prestigious Sahitya Akademi events and was invited to the Goethe-Institut’s Poets Translating Poets programme in 2019. A trained Indian classical vocalist, she co-founded Project Baartalaap in 2017, a YouTube channel, as well as a musical band of the same name, recognised by Rolling Stone India in 2020.
